Screening LCA vs full LCA: which study do you need?

Two very different studies are both sold under the name "life cycle assessment". One is a streamlined screening exercise designed to tell you where a product's environmental burden sits. The other is a full study conducted in conformance with ISO 14040 and ISO 14044, built to withstand external scrutiny and, where required, independent critical review. Buying the wrong one wastes money in both directions: a full study to answer an internal design question is expensive overkill, and a screening study offered in response to a compliance requirement will be rejected by exactly the audience it was meant to satisfy.

The deciding factor is not the product, the budget or the deadline. It is the intended use of the result, which is why the standards insist that intended application and audience are stated before any data is gathered.

What does a screening LCA actually answer?

A screening study answers questions of direction. Where are the hotspots in this product's life cycle? Is the burden dominated by raw materials, by our own energy use, or by something downstream we had not considered? Which design or sourcing decision would move the result most? To get there quickly, it uses a simplified inventory: primary data where it already exists, recognised secondary databases where it does not, and a limited set of impact categories chosen for relevance. A good screening report also tests how sensitive its conclusions are to the weakest assumptions, and tells you where collecting primary data would most change the answer.

That is genuinely useful work. Early in a product's development, or early in an organisation's sustainability effort, direction is worth more than precision, and a screening study delivers direction at a fraction of the effort of a full one.

What a screening study is not

The boundary needs stating just as plainly as the value. A screening LCA is not conformant with ISO 14044 for comparative assertions disclosed to the public. It is not critically reviewed. It is not a valid basis for an environmental product declaration. And it is not a substitute for a product carbon footprint when a customer has asked for a number calculated to a named standard such as ISO 14067. A consultancy that sells a screening study into any of those needs is setting its client up for a rejection, which is why we state this limitation on the Screening LCA page itself rather than in the small print.

What does a full LCA involve?

A full study follows the complete ISO 14040 and 14044 framework: goal and scope definition with the intended application and audience stated up front, a life cycle inventory built on primary data for the foreground system, impact assessment across the full relevant set of categories rather than a convenient subset, uncertainty and sensitivity analysis, and interpretation that makes the limitations explicit instead of leaving them to be discovered. Where the endpoint is an environmental product declaration, ISO 14025 and, for construction products, EN 15804 govern how the results are documented and verified, along with the applicable product category rules.

The practical difference from a screening study is less about calculation and more about evidence. Primary data must be collected across your own processes and often from suppliers, every assumption must be documented well enough for a stranger to challenge, and the whole file must hold together under questioning. This is why data collection is usually the longest phase of the work, and why it is worth assessing your data position before commissioning the study rather than after.

When is critical review required?

ISO 14044 requires an independent critical review when the study supports comparative assertions intended for public disclosure, meaning claims that one product is environmentally preferable to another. The review examines whether the methods, data and interpretation are consistent with the standard and with the stated goal. Even where review is not strictly required, tenders, customers and certification schemes often expect it, so the question to settle at the goal and scope stage is simple: will anyone outside the organisation need to trust this result against their own interests? If yes, plan for review from the start, because a study not designed for review is rarely salvageable by one at the end.

Choosing by intended use

  • You want to know where the burden sits before deciding what to investigate properly: screening study.
  • You are making early design or sourcing decisions internally: screening study, revisited as the design matures.
  • A customer has asked for the carbon number of a product: a PCF to ISO 14067 or the GHG Protocol Product Standard, not either LCA type.
  • A tender or customer requirement names ISO 14040 and 14044, or asks for an EPD: full study, with critical review or verification as the scheme requires.
  • You intend to publish a comparison against a competing product: full study with independent critical review, decided before the work begins.

The two are not rivals so much as stages. A screening study that shows the result matters commercially is the normal route into a detailed, ISO-conformant LCA, and the inventory built for the first becomes the starting point for the second.

Frequently asked questions

Can a screening LCA be upgraded to a full one later?

Yes, and that is the sensible path for most organisations. The goal and scope are redefined for the new intended use, secondary data is progressively replaced with primary data where it matters, and the documentation is brought up to the standard the audience requires.

Is a screening study wasted money if we end up needing a full LCA?

Usually the opposite. The screening result tells you where primary data collection will pay off most, which makes the full study faster and better targeted. What is wasted is a full study commissioned before anyone knew which questions mattered.

Does a screening LCA use our own data at all?

It uses whatever primary data you already hold, typically your bill of materials and production energy, and fills the gaps with recognised secondary databases. The report states which figures rest on which source, so nobody mistakes a database average for a measurement of your process.
